Miniature Chairs 6

This collection includes miniature reproductions of some of the most famous pieces of furniture of the 20th century, 1:12 scale.

1. Willow, 1903
Designer: Charles Rennie Mackintosh

This chair is much older that all other classic designer chairs—it’s over 100 years old. Pioneer of the Modern Movement in Scotland, Charles Rennie Mackintosh created the Willow chair in 1903 for the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow. The chequer pattern of the back takes the form of a stylised tree, inspired by his interest in Japanese design.

His designs, including this chair, were a great influence on the Bauhaus movement that followed later.

Mackintosh only ever made one Willow Chair but since the 1960s thousands of reproductions have been made. For example, Design Icons are selling their version with the seat upholstered in either cotton (priced £1115) or leather (priced £1155).

2. Corona, 1964
Designer: Poul M. Wolter

Corona received a lot of acclaim when it was first launched in 1964. Since its making the chair has been shown in a wide variety of fashion features, film and music videos. It was the chair used by the chiefs of state in Europe during the EU summit in Copenhagen in December 2002.

3. Barcelona bench, 1929
Designer: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Barcelona bench, a stylish smaller version of the day bed, was created for Philipp Johnson’s New York apartment. The bench, as well as the Barcelona chair, was presented at the 1929 International Expo in Spain. The design is clean and simple and uses top quality materials.

The cushions are made up of 72 leather squares individually hand cut and sewn by leather craftsmen. The bench has a wood frame which stands on polished stainless steel legs.

4. Frank Lloyd Wright Stuhl, 1908
Designer: Frand Lloyd Wright

One of the founders of modern architecture in North America, Frank Lloyd Wright embraced the use of new technology, materials and engineering to create some of the 20th century’s most influential and iconic buildings. He promoted organic architecture, was a leader of the Praire School movement.

Wright often designed many interior elements for his buildings, including furnishings, light fittings, rugs and glass decorations. These dining chairs he designed for the grand Frederick Robie House of the late Prairie period.

5. Elephant
Designers: Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles’s photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Plywood Elephant was designed as a toy for children, but also as a striking sculptural object that makes a statement in any environment with its vigorous curves and delightful character.

Designed in 1945, this piece attained legendary status in spite of the fact that it never went into mass production. In June 17, 2007, to commemorate the 100th birthday of Charles Eames, Vitra produced a limited anniversary edition of the chair for children.

6. Bibendum, 1925
Designer: Eileen Gray

Eileen Gray’s innovative Bibendum Chair was one of the 20th century’s most recognizable furniture designs. The chair is very much for lounging in and socializing. Its back/arm rest consists of two semi-circular, padded tubes encased in soft leather. The name that Gray chose for the chair, Bibendum, originates from the character created by Michelin to sell tyres.

Bibendum was designed for Madame Mathieu Lévy, a highly successful hats boutique owner. Lévy had commissioned Gray to redesign her apartment on rue de Lota in Paris. It was hoped to be new and original, with innovative designs. The process took four, painstaking years, from 1917 to 1921. During this time, Eileen Gray created the Bibendum chair along with the interior walls, furnishings, rugs and lamps.

The Bibendum Chair was relatively large. It was approximately 840 mm deep and 740 mm tall.
