Jan Tschichold’s “New Typography” was first published in 1928 in Germany and became a kind of manifesto for modern typography. This thorough and engaging study covers a wide range of topics, from theories of social criticism and art history to the growing importance of photography in graphic design. In “New Typography” Tschichold also sets out extremely clear and precise rules for the design of printed materials. The final chapters provide detailed, practical guidance on the layout of everyday business documents, right down to recommendations on choosing paper size and the right combination of fonts.
This is the first complete translation into Russian of Tschichold’s world-famous work (several chapters were published in the Soviet magazine Printing Production in 1929). The preface to the Russian edition was written by Vladimir Krichevsky.
Despite the fact that the standards described in the book are outdated and not used, and Tschichold himself eventually abandoned many of the ideas expressed, “The New Typography” still remains one of the most important books of the 20th century on typography and graphic design. The publication will be useful to graphic designers, type designers, illustrators and layout designers, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the history of graphic and type design.
The book is presented in the spirit of the original German edition of 1928.
